There is this popular idea that the correct model for economic development for the Philippines is Singapore. From the time of the late Cory Aquino up to the present administration of her son, Benigno Aquino III, most of these economists, technocrats and economic managers from the academe, business sector, and government would extol Singapore’s adherence to economic liberalization as our way out of poverty.
After all, Singapore is prosperous and a key financial center in Asia with a high standard of living as opposed to the Philippines’ third world status. You cannot argue with success and by the looks of it, Singapore is a success model in terms of economic development.
But what is the hard fact behind it?
Singapore is a city state with a population of 5 Million as compared to the population of the Philippines of 100 Million.
Yesterday marked the first year of Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s presidency.
In last year’s SONA, President Noynoy pointed out the problems his administration has inherited from the Arroyo government and how he plans to put solutions to these problems. He also claimed Filipinos can dream again. One year has passed since we tasked Noynoy to run our government and country. Most of us are somewhat optimistic that the next one would be a better leader and will make this country great once again.
When President Noynoy took office, many of us who did not vote for him still supported his plans, and held on to his promise that he will bring us to the Straight Path (“Daang Matuwid“). Continue reading

Dear Lord God,
I pray that Filipinos build more housing, water systems, irrigation, schools, bridges, labs, stadiums, universities, toilets, septage, sewerage, and other spiritually edifying structures instead of building useless churches. I pray that Filipinos this Sunday will go to the movies, gyms, libraries, parks, malls, parties, rallies, museums, restaurants, beaches, operas, concerts, fairs, hotels, motels and other spiritually enriching places and events instead of attending Holy Mass to listen to the useless opinions of fascist Catholic idiots.

This year, Pope Ratzinger made a statement that made the Roman Catholic Church less medieval somewhat – look, Big Bang Theory is a fact and God was behind it, Pope says. Most Catholics in the Philippines seem to have missed this development. The Pope also declared that Genesis is an allegory. So, Genesis is fiction, the fall of man is fiction and Original Sin is fiction. Why do Filipinos need to hand 250 bucks for their children’s spiritual betterment? Continue reading
My response to someone who think atheists are less atheists because they don’t come out themselves, they use alternate social networking profiles instead of their real names, or they don’t enthusiastically announce their non-belief in public as would fervent relidiots do it:
Happy Vesākha, everyone!
Buddha’s birthday reminds me of this one story that I’d like to share with you all. A colleague who considers himself a devout christian, hears that I am an atheist and asks me about it. Continue reading
I find it ridiculous that Catholics are given special treatment by society here in the Philippines. They seem to be unaware of this excessive privilege that they happily enjoy. This privilege has helped them in subtle ways that has led to the discrimination, oppression and marginalization of non-Catholics. Continue reading
